Ida's father,Dr. John Scudder was the first person in South India to be inoculated against cholera. Cholera is a serious disease that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. He later died of cancer. Ida decided to be the first woman missionary doctor in India to help women and babies because of her father's influence.
